Missed Opportunity
Editorial: Last night the Planning Commission had an opportunity to improve the Village's historical district and they failed to take advantage of it. The freestanding sign at 124 South Main Street was the subject of an application requesting approval of replacement panels. The sign was originally designed to be internally lighted and is constructed of a metal frame holding plastic panels. In past years, whenever requests for changes to signs came before the Commission, they always required the property owner to bring the sign up to code. Not this time.
The code in this case is Chapter 1161 of the Planning and Zoning Code and, among other things, it says, "Materials and texture are particularly important in terms of their relationship to surrounding buildings and the use of natural materials should be encouraged."
When looking at other signs within the historic district, this seems to be the only commercial sign that isn't made of wood. This is the only sign that is of modernist design.
The Planning Commission missed the opportunity to make this sign "stylistically compatible with other new, renovated and old structures in the Village District," as the law requires.
It's a small thing, perhaps, but lots of small things like this could change the character of our Village.
Let's hope the Planning Commission is more vigilant in the future. After all, that is their job; enforce the law.

When is Village Council going to fix the Planning Commission?
The article makes it seem like a problem with the Planning Commission. But this is the umpteenth bonehead decision of the Planning Commission. Time after time the Village Council has had opportunities to fix the Planning Commission. Time after time the Village Council has not fixed the problems. This really seems to be a problem with the Village Council.
How much damage does the Planning Commission have to do before council fixes the problem?
Village Council could appeal this decision themselves starting the correction process with the Planning Commission.
Hello out there Village Council members...
are you suggesting some backroom politics
if so, the a hardy LOL at the POT calling the KETTLE black.
I think you need to bone up on procedural law, and what authority council has and DOESN'T have.
"Fix" Planning Commission.
Good one.
The Planning Commission is broken. It needs fixing
The Planning Commission is broken.
It needs fixing that can readily be handled in open council meetings. No backroom desired or required.
Council APPOINTED each and every PC member
Odd huh?
and all planning commission is doing is what they are supposed to do: follow the zoning code.
maybe we need to 'fix' council.
NOW THERE'S A PLAN WE CAN ALL GET BEHIND!!
Great minds do think alike
You may be right. Council may be the problem. Wow, I think I have heard that somewhere else.
Oh, I know, it was in my post some time ago (http://granvillepress.com/node/228#comment-653).
By the way, the issue is that the Planning Commission is not following the zoning code. That was part of the point of the article.
Planning Commission strikes again
Look also at the giant sign the Planning Commission apparently approved at 238 East Broadway. Really ugly.
The village really needs to clean up its act.
