Village Law Director Selected By GOP To Run For Attorney General
Ohio Republicans have chosen Granville's Law Director, Michael Crites to run for attorney general this fall. Crites, a former U.S. Attorney is known for prosecuting the federal government's case against Pete Rose for tax evasion.
Crites, an attorney with the Columbus firm of Rich Crites & Dittmer, LLC, will face off against Democratic State Treasurer Richard Cordray in the special election to replace Marc Dann.
According to his law firm's website"
"Mr. Crites practices in the areas of litigation and public law. His statewide litigation practice focuses on complex civil litigation, product liability defense of manufacturers and suppliers, fiduciary litigation, and business litigation involving contract disputes, copyright, trademark, trade secret and covenant-not-to-compete matters. As the former United States Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio, Mr. Crites regularly represents clients in the federal courts of Ohio on various criminal and civil litigation matters. Mr. Crites also represents municipalities, school districts and other political subdivisions on charter, zoning, annexation and development issues."
Crites received a B.S. from The United States Naval Academy in 1970 and his J.D. from The Ohio Northern University School of Law in 1978.

No thanks
Clearly not a consumers advocate. How will he stand up against poor banking and lending practices??
Only if...
Good luck to Mike
Oh, stop the nitpicking. I wish Mike Crites well. He could be a superior AG to our last one just by not carousing! An AG has to be a good manager who sets the right tone -- decisions without fear or favor. If Pete Rose evaded taxes, he should be prosecuted and it's to Crites' credit that he did so. The guy bet on baseball, on games he was managing, and he lied about it. A tax evasion rap is getting off easy.
Mike has had a distinguished career by any standard. U.S. Attorney is a prestigious, important job that's a common stepping stone for higher office. (The job has been diminshed of late because the Bush administration has made being a political hack a job requirement, but it wasn't always this way.) In addition, Mike is a name partner in a solid law firm. And, remember, Granville isn't his only client, no matter how much we think the world revolves around us.
Mike is a successful lawyer, with a good resume and is totally qualified to be Attorney General. Wish him well, even if you don't vote for him.
Very well done
I notice you have carefully avoided complimenting his legal skills. I.e., "good resume", "successful lawyer", etc. LOL.
You write "Granville isn't his only client" as if that excuses the poor level of legal advice his firm has provided to Granville. Attorneys as professionals should not take on more work than they can properly complete. In fact it is an ethical violation to do anything but. End of story.
That said, I certainly wish him well in his run for AG. Any run away from Granville is fine with me.
Hey, was it the '75 or '76
Hey, was it the '75 or '76 Series that so broke your heart, YesMan???
I was sticking up for him...I wish him well...HELL, I wish you well!
Cheers.

Color me unimpressed
I think its pretty obvious to voters that Crites was the 3rd, 4th choice of the GOP establishment after all the heavies (Petro, Montgomery, Portman, etc) turned them down. I think he's done a decidedly "meh" job as our law director...as others have pointed out, he's lost several of the big cases he's gone after.
Plus, Cordray is a very impressive guy. In one corner, we have an Oxford educated, popular statewide elected official (and a 5-time Jeopardy! champ to boot!!!)...and in the other, we have a virtually unknown guy representing a tiny central Ohio village, whose professional claim to fame is going after one of the state's most popular athletes.
Sounds like a winner.

I believe that he is an Annapolis grad, Navy pilot, who claims Viet Nam service. Originally from NW Ohio, I believe, he has always been involved in R politics which eventially got him the federal appointment as U. S. Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio. He has been making the Cols legal scene for quite awhile. Lives in highly R Delaware Co.
It's never been clear why Granville can't have local counsel anymore. They seem to "need" a lawyer on Broad Street now.
Beats me, unless I digress into my "how Granville has changed..." rant. Trying to avoid that lately.

Well isn't this just wonderful?
This is the man who lost the Speedway law suit, the Cleveland Hall law suit, and manged to give the Planning Commission and the Village Council questionable advice on several other issues.
Now, the state could receive his legal counsel.
At least, with him in the middle of a state-wide campaign, he will have to resign as Village Law Director.
This is a great opportunity for Village Council to find a competent law director - maybe someone like Dan Bellman - a great lawyer, a former council member, and a resident.
If not Bellman, then, at least, someone who knows Granville and is a real lawyer and not just a political hack - whichever political party.
Should I be happy or sad?
I am not certain whether I should be happy that he probably will not have much more time to mess things up in Granville, or sad that the state might receive the same quality advice as Granville has received.
I guess the good news is that the state position is more of a management position than one of giving legal advice. And, contrary to our last attorney general, I have never heard any indication whatsoever that he has a tendency toward sexual harassment. But you would think at some point the parties would pick better candidates for attorney general.
I always did like Pete Rose.
oh boy...
Now Crites has a chance of elevating his career and at the same time able to give consistently bad legal advice at the state level. Is this a great country or what?
